It’s not just fear that holds us back.

There is so much written about overcoming fears that it can make us think we are not courageous. But it is not only fear that holds us back.

I have discovered the importance of nurturing myself.

Years ago I was given a rose by my Qi Gong master. He told me the answer was in the rose. I wasn’t sure of the question but decided I would find the answer anyway. Being the person I was at the time I decided I would peel off the petals one by one. It was fairly easy to begin with but as I moved closer to the centre of the rose it became more difficult to peel the petals off. They began to tear and I persisted forcing each petal piece off the stem. I spread the petals on my pillowcase and decided sleeping with them would give me the answer. No answer came.

I can’t remember when I first realized it but I experienced one of those ah-ha moments. If I had put that rose in water with a bit of sugar and been patient, it would have opened on its own. No force necessary. Sometimes things need to be nurtured into being.

Sometimes we need to be nurtured into being.

It is hard to start something new or to be different if you are tired, stressed, burnt out or feeling pulled in all directions. There is no sense forcing yourself to bloom before you are ready. Maybe it is better to slow down and nurture yourself.

  1. What could you do to nurture yourself today?
  2. What are you trying to force into being?
  3. How could you let go of forcing and nurture it’s becoming instead?
  4. As a leader, how could you nurture someone else into their next becoming?

I invite you not just to think about your answers but act into them. Take one small nurturing step for yourself and one small step to nurture someone else today. I would love to hear what you do.
